There is a second West End production regarding the Houdini mystique. Elan Kunin, the composer and arranger of the 2000 Saidye Bronfman Centre Yiddish Theatre musical The Great Houdini, is at it again. He is the composer and lyricist for the February 2008 English-language musical Houdini, which will play at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts at the Saidye. “If you liked the first one, you’ll love this one,” Kunin promised.
An all new Canadian musical production on the life of Harry Houdini - book by Ben Gonshor, musiclyrics by Elan Kunin and directed by Bryna Wasserman. Featuring some of Houdini’s most legendary routines, an all Montreal creative team will endeavour to create a thrilling, entertaining ride through his life - from his humble vaudeville beginnings; to the heights of his fame; and eventually to his fierce, highly publicized battle against mediums, Spiritualists and their growing popularity.

An all-new musical production created by the best of Montreal talent!

“Handcuff King.” Escape Artist. International Superstar. Since his death 80 years ago, Harry Houdini’s life has been chronicled in books, on film, and on television. And now, The Leanor and Alvin Segal Theatre proudly presents an original musical on the life of America’s first great popular entertainer. Featuring some of Houdini’s most legendary routines, don’t miss this thrilling, entertaining ride through his life - from his humble vaudeville beginnings to the heights of his fame.

At a time when spy agencies frequently co-opted amateurs, Houdini went to London and developed a relationship with a man who would later run MI-5, Britain’s legendary spy agency. For the next several years, the world’s most famous magician traveled to Germany and Russia and routinely reported his findings.

"As Artistic Director of The Leanor and Alvin Segal Theatre, it is my privilege to work with many young, talented, creative Montreal artists. On this production I have the distinct pleasure of working with two such individuals. Over the years Ben Gonshor and Elan Kunin have emerged as two outstanding young talents and it is now my pleasure to work with them on the creation of this new musical, Houdini." – Bryna Wasserman
