C'est grâce à Sherlock Holmes que Sir Arthur Conan Doyle est connu dans le monde entier. Avec 60 aventures du détective, c'est quantitativement l'oeuvre majeure de l'auteur. Mais pour ce dernier ce n'était pas celle qui le passionnait le plus. D'autant plus, que le héros de Baker Street éclipsait tout le reste de ses écrits (encore aujourd'hui). Tant et si bien qu'en 1893, à la 26e aventure, il tente de se débarrasser de cette étiquette en tuant sa création (dans l'aventure : The Final Problem). Toutefois, 10 ans plus tard, son éditeur, sous la pression du public, lui fait une offre qu'il ne peut déçemment refuser. Conan Doyle ressuscite Sherlock Holmes et 34 nouvelles aventures seront publiées entre 1901 et 1927, à un rythme moins frénétique.
